Educators Invited to Attend Two-Day STEM Service-Learning Institute

Southern California STEM Service-Learning Institute: Earth and Beyond

Date: June 11-12, 2013, 8 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.

Target audience: Teachers, administrators and community leaders who work with grades 4-12 and have an interest in enhancing STEM education, environmental education and service-learning programs. This includes alternative education, AVID, gifted and talented and after school programs.

Overview: Explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics and their relationship to Earth and space exploration as part of an engaging two-day institute designed to promote and support STEM education programs. The institute will explore such topics as recruitment and retention of underrepresented youth, project management, building and sustaining school and community partnerships, gender equity, green careers, environmental education, and evaluation and assessment. California Common Core and connections to "A Framework for K-12 Science Education" will also be covered. Keynote speakers include former astronaut Ellen Ochoa, director of the Johnson Space Center; David Seidel, deputy education director and manager of STEM elementary and secondary education at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Angela Mason, director of Community Gardening and Green Youth Farm at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

The cost to attend is $50 per person and includes educational materials and some meals. (Limited scholarships are available to cover registration costs.)
